Teen Arrested After Fentanyl, Cocaine Found Hidden in Scooter

EL PASO, TX — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized over 12 pounds of fentanyl and 0.3 pounds of cocaine at the Paso Del Norte international crossing on April 21 inside a motorized scooter.

According to a release from CBP, the scooter was driven by an 18-year-old U.S. citizen trying to cross into the U.S. from Mexico around 8 p.m. Officers noticed something unusual about the scooter’s appearance and decided to take a closer look with a secondary inspection.

A drug-sniffing dog picked up the scent of narcotics, and officers used scanning equipment to check the scooter's battery compartment. Inside, they found seven hidden bundles, one with cocaine, two containing fentanyl pills, and four filled with powdered fentanyl.

CBP officers arrested the driver, and she was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents to face federal charges associated with the failed smuggling attempt.

“Smugglers will use any means possible in their attempts to introduce drugs into our communities," said CBP El Paso Port Director Ray Provencio. “CBP officers remain vigilant because any one of the thousands of arriving vehicles we encounter daily could be transporting drugs."
