Texas Tech University System Chancellor Announces Retirement

LUBBOCK, TX — Chancellor Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., announced Friday that he plans to retire within the year, concluding more than 15 years of leadership within the Texas Tech University System.

Mitchell, who began his service in 2010 as the eighth president of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC), became the TTU System’s fifth chancellor in October 2018. He served in both roles for nearly a year before stepping down as TTUHSC president in 2019.

On behalf of the Board of Regents and the entire Texas Tech University System, I want to thank Chancellor Mitchell for a tremendous length of service, first as president of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and then as chancellor of our system,” said Board Chairman Cody Campbell.

“Throughout his tenure, Tedd has led the charge to transform our system and advance innumerable historic initiatives for our universities, and in doing so, has improved countless lives in West Texas, across our state, and around the country. We are grateful for his wisdom, innovative spirit, and far-reaching impact, and congratulate him on his well-deserved retirement.”

Mitchell will remain in his role during the Board of Regents’ search for a successor. More information will be shared following the Board’s Aug. 14-15 meeting in Lubbock.
