LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Public Health Department is urging residents to avoid handling sick or dead birds after Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu or H5N1, was detected in wild birds in Lubbock and surrounding counties.
Health officials warn that close contact with infected birds — including touching or moving them — can transmit the virus to humans. HPAI is often fatal to domestic poultry and can cause severe illness and death in wild bird populations.
Need to Know:
- Avoid contact with wild birds.
- Do not touch or handle sick or dead birds of any species, including geese, grackles, hawks or other wildlife.
- Report dead birds.
- Residents who encounter sick or dead birds should contact Lubbock Animal Services at 806-775-2057.
- Protect yourself if handling is unavoidable.
- If you must move a bird—for example, for disposal—health officials recommend wearing gloves and a mask. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water afterward.
- Seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
- Anyone who experiences flu-like symptoms after possible exposure should promptly contact their healthcare provider.
Public health officials say avoiding direct contact with affected wildlife is the most effective way to reduce potential transmission.
