Strong Performance from True Freshman Lifts Texas Tech Over ACU

ABILENE, TX — Freshman right-hander Connor Mohan recorded his first career win Monday night, tossing six strong innings to lead Texas Tech to a 9-2 victory over Abilene Christian at Crutcher Scott Field.

Mohan retired the first 10 batters he faced and struck out a career-high five while allowing just two runs on four hits. The outing marked the third straight midweek start for the Burleson native, who helped Texas Tech (13-23) earn its second consecutive road win.

The Red Raiders backed Mohan early with a three-run first inning that featured RBI hits from Peyton Schulze and Antonelli Savattere and an RBI groundout from Damian Bravo. They added two more in the third after a ground-rule double by Davis Rivers, followed by RBI singles from Schulze and freshman Coleman Ryan.

Leading 5-0, Tech continued to extend its lead with two more runs in the fourth and another pair in the fifth. Kyeler Thompson went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and his 22nd and 23rd stolen bases of the season.

Mohan worked into the sixth before allowing his first run — a solo homer by Reese Borho — and another on a pair of doubles. He ended his night by striking out Diego Cardenas on a full-count breaking ball with runners on second and third.

Sophomore Lukas Pirko closed the game with three shutout innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out three.
