PHILADELPHIA, PA — Texas Tech outfielder and first baseman Logan Hughes became the fourth first-round MLB Draft pick in program history Sunday after the Houston Astros selected him with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.
Hughes joins Donald Harris (No. 5 overall in 1989), Josh Jung (No. 8 overall in 2019) and Jace Jung (No. 12 overall in 2022) as the only first-round selections in Red Raiders history.
A native of DeLand, Florida, Hughes spent two seasons at Texas Tech and became the program's first consensus All-American since Jace Jung in 2022. His selection also marked the first player chosen from the Big 12 Conference in this year's draft.
The selection extends Texas Tech's streak of producing at least one MLB Draft pick to 36 consecutive seasons. Hughes is the 72nd player drafted during head coach Tim Tadlock's tenure and the 187th player selected in program history.
Hughes earned First Team All-Big 12 honors in 2026 after batting .375 with 18 home runs and 71 RBIs in 55 games. He posted a .510 on-base percentage and a team-leading 1.263 OPS while drawing 50 walks, being hit by six pitches and striking out only 33 times. He also hit .500 against pitches thrown 93 mph or faster.
During his two-year career with the Red Raiders, Hughes batted .350 with 37 home runs and 129 RBIs over 107 games. His 37 career home runs rank seventh in program history.
Hughes also excelled in conference play, compiling a .384 career batting average (91-for-237) in 60 Big 12 games with 20 home runs and 60 RBIs. His 20 conference home runs are tied with Josh Bard for the most in program history, while his 60 Big 12 RBIs rank fifth, 91 conference hits rank ninth and his .384 conference batting average ranks fourth all-time at Texas Tech.
He became Texas Tech's first multi-time All-American since 2022, when Jace Jung earned unanimous All-America honors and pitcher Brandon Birdsell received multiple All-America selections.
The 2026 MLB Draft continues with Rounds 1-4 before concluding with Rounds 5-20.
