No. 13 Texas Tech Downs Oregon State on the Road

 

CORVALLIS, OR — Will Hammond connected with Coy Eakin on a 32-yard touchdown pass with 6:31 remaining to give No. 13 Texas Tech the lead, and the Red Raiders pulled away for a 35-24 comeback victory over Oregon State on Saturday night.

Texas Tech improved to 2-0 after overcoming a 24-21 deficit early in the fourth quarter.

J'Koby Williams led the Red Raiders on the ground with 116 rushing yards and a touchdown.

After Eakin's go-ahead touchdown, Oregon State moved the ball downfield with an opportunity to respond, but Aeryn Hampton dropped a pass before Braden Atkinson's fourth-and-9 attempt fell incomplete.

Thomas Castellanos later connected with Matt Ludwig for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:03 remaining to give Texas Tech the final 11-point margin.

Hammond finished with 189 passing yards and one touchdown for the Red Raiders.

Atkinson threw for 399 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon State, which fell to 0-2. Jesse Legree caught eight passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns, becoming the first Oregon State player since 2003 to record more than 200 receiving yards in a home game.

Texas Tech entered the matchup as a 26½-point favorite after opening the season with a 33-10 victory over Abilene Christian.

Oregon State was coming off a 33-20 loss to Houston in its season opener.

After Caleb Ojeda's 54-yard field goal attempt fell short at the end of the first quarter, Castellanos gave Texas Tech the first lead of the game with a 7-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter.

Oregon State answered on its next possession when Atkinson connected with Legree for a 75-yard touchdown to tie the game.

Cameron Dickey scored on a 1-yard run on fourth-and-1 to give Texas Tech a 14-7 lead. Stone Harrington then attempted a 53-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, but the kick fell short.

The Beavers cut the deficit to 14-13 early in the second half when Atkinson found AJ Newberry for a 4-yard touchdown. Oregon State missed the extra-point attempt.

Williams responded on Texas Tech's next drive with a 38-yard touchdown run to extend the Red Raiders' lead.

Oregon State answered again when Atkinson connected with Legree for a 37-yard touchdown. Atkinson then ran in the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 21.

The Beavers took their first lead after Tyler Bailey recovered a Hammond fumble at the Texas Tech 22-yard line. Ojeda converted a 34-yard field goal to put Oregon State ahead 24-21.

Texas Tech responded with Hammond's touchdown pass to Eakin and added another score late to secure the victory.

The win came in Texas Tech's first trip to Corvallis. The Red Raiders defeated Oregon State 45-14 last season in Lubbock.

Texas Tech will have a short turnaround before opening Big 12 play Friday against Houston at Galaxy Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
