AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) hosted the national Uniformed Safety Education Officers Workshop (USEOW) last week in Grapevine, drawing state police officers from across the country for four days of public safety education training and competition.
The event, held June 23–26, focused on enhancing outreach and communication skills for officers who serve as public safety educators in their respective states.
“The success of this year’s Uniformed Safety Education Officers Workshop is a testament to our commitment to public safety and education,” said DPS North Texas Region Chief Jeremy Sherrod. “By bringing together dedicated officers from across the nation, we are not only enhancing our skills but also strengthening our ability to serve and protect our communities.”
Texas DPS Safety Education Lieutenants and Sergeants presented on a variety of topics. DPS Sgt. Ethan Sartor, of the North Texas Region, earned first place for his public safety presentation. Sgt. Deon Cockrell, of the Central Texas Region, won first place for a radio public service announcement (PSA) on traffic safety and second place for a television PSA on safe gun storage.
USEOW is designed to promote public safety and protect lives and property through community education. Officers participating in the workshop refined their skills in public speaking, media relations, and community engagement on issues such as traffic safety, drug prevention, child passenger safety, and underage drinking.
DPS Safety Education Service officers regularly serve as public information officers and conduct outreach presentations for schools and organizations statewide.
