No. 15 Texas Tech Remains Perfect at Home in Win Over Utah

LUBBOCK, TX — JT Toppin and Christian Anderson each recorded double-doubles as No. 15 Texas Tech powered past Utah, 88-74, on Wednesday night, improving to 9-0 at United Supermarkets Arena this season.

Toppin turned in one of the best performances of his career, finishing with 31 points, 13 rebounds, a career-high seven assists and five blocks. He also knocked down a career-high three 3-pointers while shooting 14 of 23 from the field.

Anderson was equally dominant, tying his career high with six 3-pointers and posting 26 points and 10 assists—his fifth double-double of the season.

Toppin has now notched six straight double-doubles, bringing his season total to 11 and his career total to 42. Anderson’s 6-for-11 performance from deep helped Texas Tech (13-4, 3-1 Big 12) finish 13-for-31 from beyond the arc, marking the 12th time in 17 games the Red Raiders have hit at least 10 threes.

Donovan Atwell added 12 points, all from 3-point range, while LeJuan Watts contributed nine points and eight rebounds. Jaylen Petty finished with eight points and three assists as Tech assisted on 22 of its 36 made baskets.

The Red Raiders dominated the glass with a 41-28 rebounding advantage, including 13 offensive boards. They also forced 13 turnovers and outscored the Utes 36-24 in the paint.

Keanu Dawes and Don McHenry led Utah (12-6) with 18 points apiece. The Utes shot 12-for-25 from 3-point range and 12-for-17 at the free-throw line but could not overcome Texas Tech’s efficiency and size inside.

Texas Tech built a commanding 50-28 halftime lead behind 18 points each from Toppin and Anderson. Watts had nine points and seven boards in the opening half as Tech shot 57.1% from the field and 44.4% from 3.

“It wasn’t perfect by any stretch and we can play better,” McCasland said. “But give Utah credit. Their pace is difficult to defend. We had a hard time guarding them in stretches, but for the majority of the game for us to offensive rebound like we did and have a solid night defensive rebounding to limit their second attempts was the difference in the game.”

Texas Tech returns to action Saturday, hosting No. 11 BYU at 7 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena in the first of two meetings this season.
