No. 12 Texas Tech Travels to Waco to Play Baylor

 

LUBBOCK, TX — Riding a three-game winning streak and a climb of three spots in the national polls, the Texas Tech Red Raiders will take their momentum on the road Tuesday night to face the Baylor Bears at Foster Pavilion in Waco.

The No. 12 Red Raiders (14-4, 4-1 Big 12) are coming off an 84-71 comeback win over BYU on Saturday, erasing a nine-point deficit and improving to 10-0 at home this season. Texas Tech has won eight of its last 10 games overall and is 1-1 in Big 12 road contests.

Baylor (11-6, 1-4) has dropped four of its first five conference games and is coming off an 80-62 loss at Kansas on Friday. The Bears’ lone Big 12 win came last week at Oklahoma State.

Texas Tech leads the Big 12 in 3-pointers made per game (11.1) and ranks second in shooting percentage from beyond the arc (37.8%). The Red Raiders went 11-for-29 from long range against BYU and have made at least 10 3-pointers in 13 of 18 games this season, including a program-record 17 in wins over Oklahoma State and Lindenwood.

JT Toppin, named the Big 12 Player of the Week and Naismith National Player of the Week on Monday, continues to anchor Tech’s lineup. The junior has posted seven straight double-doubles and leads the conference with 12 this season. He is averaging 21.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game, ranking fourth in the Big 12 in scoring and 13th nationally.

Toppin scored 27 points with 13 rebounds against BYU and leads the nation with 160 made field goals. Christian Anderson adds 19.8 points and a Big 12-best 7.4 assists per game, while LeJuan Watts (13.4 ppg) enters the contest with 996 career points. Donovan Atwell averages 11.4 points per game as Texas Tech scores 83.4 points per outing with four players in double figures.

Baylor is 8-2 at home this season and ranks third in the Big 12 in scoring at 87.1 points per game. Cameron Carr leads the Bears with 20.5 points per contest, ranking fifth in the conference. Freshman Tounde Yessoufou averages 18.0 points and is second in the league in steals.

Carr and Obi Agbim have each made 41 3-pointers this season for Baylor, which is shooting 36.7% from deep. The Bears also rank third in the conference with 5.1 blocks per game.

Tuesday’s matchup is the only regular-season meeting between the two programs. Texas Tech leads the all-time series 85-65 and has won three straight against Baylor, its longest streak in the rivalry since 2006.

Following the game in Waco, Texas Tech will return home to host Houston on Saturday. ESPN announced during the BYU game that College GameDay Covered by State Farm will originate from Lubbock ahead of the matchup.
