70-Year-Old Killed in Fiery I-20 Crash Near Abilene

 

ABILENE, TX — A 70-year-old man was killed Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 near mile marker 292, according to the Abilene Police Department.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. on May 4.

Preliminary reports state that the driver, Johnny King Jr., 70, was traveling eastbound in a 2023 Nissan Kicks when he veered off the highway and struck a tree. The vehicle caught fire after the crash, says APD.

Several witnesses stopped at the scene and were able to remove the driver from the vehicle. They attempted life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived. The Abilene Fire Department responded and continued to resuscitate the driver.

Johnny King Jr., a California resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been notified.

The Abilene Police Department’s Traffic Division is investigating the cause of the crash.
