13-Year-Old Ejected in Gaines County Crash

GAINES COUNTY, TX — A 13-year-old boy was killed in a crash Saturday afternoon in Gaines County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. when Mario Antonio Tornez-Gutierrez, 38, was driving east on County Road 208. Investigators say he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with County Road 225.

His vehicle, which was carrying Monica Flores, 36, along with three children ages 13, 10, and 8, was hit by a pickup truck traveling south. The truck was driven by Johnny Wiebe, 34, with passenger John Dyck, 34.

DPS says the crash caused both vehicles to roll. The 13-year-old boy, who was sitting in the back left seat and not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

Tornez-Gutierrez, Flores, and the 10-year-old girl were taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock with serious injuries.

The 8-year-old girl was transported to a hospital in Odessa. Wiebe and Dyck sustained minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital in Seminole.

The crash remains under investigation.
