LUBBOCK, TX — A Flood Watch is in effect in the South Plains from Monday evening through Tuesday midday. While the chance of rain lingers into midweek, drier and sunnier weather is expected to return by Friday, with temperatures staying slightly below seasonal averages in the 60s and 70s, according to the National Weather Service.

Flood Watch May 5
Today, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon, especially after 4 p.m. Some of these storms could become severe, with damaging winds up to 70 mph, large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. It will be cloudy and breezy throughout the day, with a high near 63° and east-southeast winds at 20 to 25 mph.
Tonight, storms will increase in coverage and intensity as heavy rainfall is likely after 1 a.m. A Flood Watch begins at 7 p.m. and continues through noon Tuesday. Patchy fog is also possible before midnight. The low will be around 53°, with east winds between 15 and 20 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. Rainfall totals overnight could reach 1 to 2 inches, with higher amounts possible in stronger storms.

Severe Weather Outlook May 5
Tuesday will begin with lingering showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 p.m. Skies will remain mostly cloudy early but should gradually clear in the afternoon. The high will be near 73°, with winds shifting from east to west as the system exits the area. Rain chances decrease to 40% by midday.
Tuesday night will be partly cloudy and calmer, with a low around 49°. Winds will shift from the north-northwest at 5 to 10 mph as cooler, drier air settles in.
Wednesday brings a slight chance of isolated showers or storms in the afternoon, but much of the day will be mostly sunny with a high near 74°. Winds will remain light and out of the north-northwest around 10 mph.
Wednesday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 49°. A few lingering showers may develop before 1 a.m., but most areas are expected to stay dry. Winds will continue from the north at 5 to 10 mph.
Thursday will follow a similar pattern, with mostly sunny skies and a slight 20% chance of afternoon storms. Highs will stay near 72°, and winds from the north will remain light, and temperatures will fall to around 49° at night.
Friday begins a dry and mild stretch heading into the weekend. Sunny skies and a high near 75° are expected, with light northerly winds. Friday night will stay mostly clear with a low around 51°.
Saturday and Sunday will both see mostly sunny skies and pleasant spring temperatures. Highs will reach the mid- to upper 70s each day, with overnight lows near 50°.
