Stormy Start, Wetter Weekend Ahead for the South Plains

 

LUBBOCK, TX — This week’s weather in the South Plains will be a mix of warm temperatures, sunshine, and several chances for severe storms. The first half of the week brings the highest risk, especially Monday and Tuesday, with the potential for large hail, strong winds, and possibly tornadoes. Things begin to settle down midweek, with some sunshine returning, but chances of rain will pick back up again by Friday and continue into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, a dryline moves in this afternoon, bringing warm weather and a chance for storms, especially east of the Caprock. Some storms could be severe with large hail, strong winds, and possibly a tornado. Expect sunny, hot conditions with a high near 90°F and southwest winds at 15-20 mph. Tonight, there’s a 30% chance of storms before 1 a.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 60°F.

Storm chances stick around on Tuesday, with a 50% chance of showers and storms in the afternoon. Some of them could be severe again. The high will be cooler, around 79°F, and winds will switch from the south to the north. Tuesday night also looks stormy, with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of those could be strong, and it’ll drop to around 55°F overnight.

By Wednesday, things should start calming down a little, but there’s still a 40% chance of storms during the day. It’ll be mostly sunny with a high near 78°F and a mix of southeast and southwest winds. Wednesday night will be mostly clear with a low near 50°F.

Thursday will be sunny and warm with a high around 81°F, and winds shifting from the west to the east in the afternoon. There is a small 20% chance of storms after 1 a.m. on Thursday night, and it’ll be partly cloudy with a low around 53°F.

More rain is expected on Friday, with a 50% chance of showers and storms throughout the day and into the night. It’ll be partly sunny with a high near 70°F and a low near 54°F.

Saturday keeps the storm chances going, also at 50%, with a high around 73°F. Saturday night drops to a 30% chance of storms and a low near 56°F. By Sunday, there’s still a 30% chance of showers and storms, but it’ll be partly sunny and warmer, with a high near 79°F.
